What your future may hold

As a senior associate in the Financial Regulatory & FIG M&A practice you will play a lead role to lead and further develop our Belgian financial regulatory practice and be involved on FIG M&A. You will be part of Freshfields’ wider Global Transactions team.  You will work closely with the M&A team and the the banking & finance team on Belgian and cross-border matters.

Matters you will be involved in include:

  • Advising a broad range of clients on financial regulatory matters, including fund regulation (AIFMD), DORA, MiFID II, banking, payments and insurance regulation;
  • Representing clients before the Belgian financial regulators;
  • Advising on M&A and other transactions in the financial services sector, including qualifying holding procedures;
  • Providing advice to funds and financial institutions on ESG matters.

Furthermore, you will:

  • Be in the lead for the matters described above, of course working in a collegiate environment for and with a range of partners, counsel and (principal) associates within Brussels and from various other offices;
  • Develop and help drive relationships with clients including gaining a good knowledge of the client’s businesses, economic drivers, markets and sector in order to ensure advice is relevant and commercial;
  • Work as part of a team and a growing practice and taking an active part in sharing knowledge and experience with the team;
  • Take responsibility for coaching and mentoring junior team members, fostering their development;
  • Engage in business development activities and speaking opportunities.

Your skillset

  • You obtained a Belgian Master in Law with strong academic results;
  • You have as from 5 years of experience in Financial Regulatory, preferably both on the advisory and M&A side;
  • You demonstrate technical skills in your legal work, with an international awareness and focus to your work;
  • You can build trust and rapport to develop effective relationships, internally and externally;
  • You are service orientated and have a “client first” mindset;
  • You have an excellent command of English and French or Dutch (written and spoken) with a good command of the second national language;
  • You are a team player, you have an entrepreneurial spirit and good communication skills;
  • You respect and enjoy the diversity of cultural, social and academic backgrounds found in the firm.
